FRANKIE
Sophie Hirsch
You never know what’s going to happen when you start to play. What version of yourself will show up. What
will slip out when the standard rules of behavior fall away. Suddenly you’re louder, more affectionate, or
ambitious. Tenacious and unapologetically dominant. Maybe a little meaner, too. Parts you thought you’d
outgrown, keep tightly bottled up, or never knew existed may rise to the surface. It can be curious and a little
unsettling, even for the people who like you best. My partner has told me more than once, “You’re
impossible to play with.” Which might be fair. I sometimes meet a version of myself I don’t fully recognize
either.
Play shows us who we are, whether we want to know or not. It reveals what’s tucked beneath the contained
version of ourselves, the parts we manage, edit, and disguise. Sometimes it’s a surprise, sometimes it can’t be
controlled. To play is to get to know yourself within a safe container.
FRANKIE by Sophie Hirsch traces play from concept to lived experience, revealing its capacity to expose,
disrupt, and release.
